Vectors

Today in math we started off with mental math, and then Mr Max did examples of the parallelogram method and the triangle method using questions from old provincial exams.

Here are the questions we did:

The diagram above is the triangle method.

The first step to using the triangle method is:

1. Draw an "ugly sketch"

2. Find the magnitude and direction of the first line and then draw it on the orgin. In this case it is, the magnitude is 15 cm and the direction is 40 degrees N of W.

3. You then draw parellel lines from the end of the vector to create another orgin.

4. Next you find the magnitude and direction of the other line. The magnitude is 10 cm and the direction is N.

5. After you have the second vector, you can then find the resultant vector, in this case it is 22.713 cm and 30 degrees W of N.

This is an example of the parallelogram method.
The steps are:
1. Make your ugly sketch.
2. Draw the vectors tail to tail starting at the orgin.
3. You don't know the magnitude of the vectors so draw a ray just using the direction.
4. You do know the resultant vector so draw that .
5. You then draw parallel rays to make an intersection point.
6. You will then know the magnitude of then vectors.
I hope these steps help. Remember test on Friday good luck studying!
