Wednesday, nov 24/08

Hey everyone.
Today we started with mental math, then Mr.Maksymchuck started teaching us Sequences & Series. He showed us 4 methods to solve questions. Three of which use calculators, and one uses the excell program.

The first method is slow, and very complicated, and we were advised not to use it.

The second calculator method was quicker, and personaly I like it best.

The third calculator method uses the graphing program, and it shows how the number goes up, or down depending on the question. The line on the graph isn't straight either, it is rounded or curved.

The fourth method, the excell method, is much like the second calculator method. It is quick, for those that know how to use the excell program (I don't know how).

Homework for tomorrow is
"why 1016.666?"

Sorry there are no notes from class, I couldn't find them.....

Day After Probability Test

So yesterday we had the probability test and I don't know about any of you but it seemed way easier than I thought it would be......so it would seem that Maks was actually right about that. Maks should have the tests marked fairly soon too.
*crossing of fingers*
Anyway, we're starting a new unit about sequences & series. It should only take us about a week, I only say "about a week" because we managed to push probability up almost a week. But I've definitly got a better feeling about this one.

Alright, guess I'm done posting for today so bye.

Test Review

Hey Everybody,

It's the day before the test so I hope everyone the best of luck on this "wonderful" unit of probability.

Before I start to review for the test I would also like to mention that Accelerated Math is no longer due for tomorrow but will be an open ended assignment due for January.
Just a review for the test, here are some areas that probably should be considered for your personal formula sheets:

1. Pathway or Route Problems
-Pascal's Triangle

2. The Fundamental Counting Principle
-Permutations nPr
-Combinations nCr

3. Independant and Dependant Events

4. Mutually Exclusive and Inclusive

Oh ya just a little note for everyone, the "prime" symbol means the not of.
ex. Winnipeg' means those not associated with Winnipeg.

Again, hope everyone the best!
Here are some of the problems that we went over today:

Mutually Exclusive

Here's what the lesson on Thursday looked like...

Thursday, 20th November

Well no mental math today, were taking all the time we can get to study and review for our test. We have the choice of taking it tomorrow or tuesday of next week. We received a booklet with example questions, the answers for correcting are on the network drive under math. We figured out most of the answers in class today.
*Remember to make up your Formula Sheets* Probability Test review today And Test has been moved to Tuesday the 25th Good Luck studying everyone!!

Review
1. Pathway Problems (pascals triangle)
2.Fundamental Counting Principle (includes nCr and nPr)(combinations and permutations)
3.Independence and Dependence
4. Mutually Exclusive and Inclusive

November 18

Hey everyone today in math we started off with mental math. Next we went over our homework question ( Exerize 5 question 3). I had a little trouble with it myself but after seeing Mr. Maks work the problem out it made way more sense.

After finishing the homework question we had time left over to work on 1 of 3 things:

Just a reminder acclerated math objectives are due FRIDAY and our unit test is also on FRIDAY.

November 17th Independent and Dependnt Events

When talking ,"independent and dependant" in probability the difference and definitions are that when talking "independent events" we, as in humans or testers, have no outcome on the final probability, where as dependant means that our choice our pick in the event or situation will cause an effect on the upcoming probability of the next selection

Here to the right gives an example of dependent events. The first choice of ours affected the second choices probability

November 14th What Stan Has Gathered

Hi guys and gals I wasn't here Friday but I have gathered, from this person and that person, that we had a interesting problem that needed to be done, something to do with chicken nuggets or some crazy thing. I thought you may want to show your friends so that'll be my post. Unfortunately i don't have an amazing smartboard picture so i'll just tell the bits and pieces of the question. it goes something like "what is the highest possible# of chicken nuggets that you CAN'T get with the packages 6 9 20. Supposedly everyone did trial and error and they got it. the answer was 43. I give a hand to all you hard workers.

Further To Huckleberry....

So I took the liberty of posting Sir Ken to our blog.

Apparently I really enjoy listening to people who thinks like him. Makes me want to be a teacher when I grow up.

RM

November 13th Blog

Hey everybody, we started off the class with some mental math.
Mr. Max showed us these two videos about our education system. I remember seeing one of these last year I really enjoyed it, I agree with a lot of the stuff he was saying. It really makes you think about how everybody is so different in the way we learn. I'm glad he showed this video again. A lot of people need to hear the things he is saying and the message he was telling.

Question Corrections

Hey, everyone. Sorry for the late post. The class yesterday started off with a debate over whether or not stores should be open on Remembrance Day. Some people thought so, while others didn't think so. I personally think they shouldn't be.

Then we corrected the two "quizzes" that were due for the class. The answers will follow

If there is anyone that wants extra help with probability, there is a link on the blog. Use demo for both the username and password
REMEMBER: Get Essays in, and to do the accelerated math
Just to remind you,the scribe is open for today (Nov 13)

November 10 2008

Hey guys so Mr. Mac's isn't here today so guess what that means!!!!
O you guessed it.... NO MENTAL MATH!! Yeah, I bet everyone is so happy! This is turning out to be a pretty good monday afternoon:P

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So back to math, the test has been reschedualed!! Which in my case is really good!! I still don't really have the concept of this unit yet!! Hardest unit by far so far I say. So instead of the test being this Thursday November 13 it is now schedualed for sometime next week, so everyone can take a breather and not worry so much!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So now what we are doing today,

-work on accelerated math if you would like

-make sure you get your quizes done that Mr. Macs handed out

-make sure to get your essay in

-and study for the test mext week!!UGH

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So I don't know about you guys but things that I do understand in this unit is like doing the tree diagram and the factoral thing(!), other than that I'm finding problems with everything else!! I do wish we had school tomorrow just so I could come here after school and get some help with this stuff! Just I know how to do the first thing but after that I have trouble with telling what comes next! I don't know maybe someone could help me out if you kinda get what I mean here.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Well hope everyone had a really good weekend and had a really good time at the service today! Don't forget tomorrow is Rememberance Day so wear your poppy even if you are just sitting infront of the TV! Support the troops we lost and are fighting everyday for us!! Have a great day off!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And just a reminder on wednesday Graham you are the scribber!
Nov 6 home work correction.
Today we did metal math, home work correction and we worked on a probability quiz.
november 5, probability
Hey everyone! I don't fully understand probability so I am going to post the slides that Mr.Max did with us.
This is the slide to the answer to the question he asked about the cards.
This is the pizza question Mr.Max did with us.
This is the answer to the e-mail question.
This is the difference between permutation and combination.
We started class off today with a mental math. We then corrected the card question and did another question about pizza toppings. We then finished off by answering the email question. For tomorrow we are to finish Exercise 6, #5.
Tuesday, November 4, 2008
Tuesday, November 4th, 2008
Today we started off the class by doing mental math as usual. We then corrected the questions that were for homework on exercise #2 and #3.
Next we learned about Permutations & Combinations, which is about the
"Ways to organize multiple things, in order"
* Question #4 on exercise 2 and the poker question that was assigned at the end of class are both homework for tmrw's class *
*** Reminder that there will be a Probability Test on Thursday, Nov 13 ***
Monday, November 3rd- The Eve of the Election
Today is November 3rd!! One day before the Presidential Election, just in case anyone is wondering! Who would you vote for?? Barack Obama or John McCain??
Moving on to Math! Today there is no Mental Math, but Mr. Maksymchuk gave us time to work on Exercise 3 Questions 1-4 on Sample Spaces and Exercise 2 Question 10&11.
He is predicting that we wil be taking a test on this probability unit next Thursday, or the 13th of November.
We also received our Vectors Test! YAY!
Mr. Maksymchuk started to answer the first question of Exercise 3 using a spreadsheet, just to make sure people were on the right track:
1. Two special dice are rolled: Dice 1 has the following numbers: 2,2,4,4,4,6. Dice 2 has the following numbers: 1,1,1,5,5,5. Here are the answers of the question using the dice.
a)P(sum less than 6)= 15
b)P(sum greater than 2)= 35
c)P(sum is even)= 0
d)P(sum of 11 or 5)= 12
e)P(sum= 7 and one die is showing a 5)= 6
Here is a different way to answer this Question 1 that doesn't involve using a spreadsheet:
Here is a tree that describes the probabilities of rolling the following numbers on each dice:
